About Aleksandra Zaforemska

During my undergraduate degree in Geogaphy at the University of Edinburgh, I developed an interest in remote sensing and its environmental applications. This encouraged me to pursue an MPhil in Geospatial Engineering at Newcastle University, with research focused on UAV laser scanning of forests. The project explored a variety of point cloud segmentation methods and their suitability for single tree detection in mixed species woodlands. I have enjoyed my work both in the field as well as in the computing lab.

In 2017 I joined the Met Office’s Informatics Lab for a summer internship, where I learned the principles of scientific computing and its importance in the study of weather and climate, while also getting an opportunity to work on the new method of data visualization that is virtual reality. I realized the power that cutting edge technology has in monitoring and protecting our environment and now I would like to learn how to use it to its full potential.

Geospatial Systems CDT gives me an opportunity to enhance my skill set and further grow as a researcher. I believe that the courses as part of MRes in Geospatial Data Science will give me the necessary computing background to develop new methods of analysis of the remotely sensed data. I am open to a career beyond academia and Geospatial System CDT supports this path by giving me valuable exposure to the industry. In the future I hope to use the skills developed throughout my PhD to provide insight to key decision makers on how to effectively manage and protect our climate and biodiversity.
