About Holly
My name is Holly, and I joined the fifth cohort of the Geospatial Systems CDT in 2023.
Prior to joining the CDT, I graduated from my BSc in Environmental Biology at the University of Nottingham in 2023. My final project for my undergraduate degree focused on measuring the effect of increased atmospheric CO2 on Arctic wetland plants, particularly looking at the impact on CH4 and CO2 emissions from the plants and the impact on root exudation of sugars.
For my MRes project as part of the CDT, I collected field data from peatlands in Northern Sweden to classify the vegetation found on peatlands, testing the transferability of machine learning models for vegetation classification. This leads into my PhD research, where I will begin with using deep learning techniques to create a vegetation classification model applicable on a regional scale to Northern Sweden. In addition, I will be measuring methane emissions from peatlands affected by permafrost decay in Northern Sweden and investigating spatial patterns in this region.
