Biography

About Roy

My career in the construction industry began as a Graduate Engineer in 1987 and advanced to Project Manager by 2002. I have worked with both main and subcontracting companies across the UK, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and Zambia. Notable projects include the Hong Kong Airport, the Millennium Dome, and various multi-storey hotels and offices, as well as smaller new-builds and refurbishments.

In 2021, I decided to shift my career focus and enrolled on the MSc Renewable Energy Enterprise and Management course at Newcastle University, where I graduated with distinction and received an outstanding student award for my dissertation on the energy performance of pharmaceutical warehouse facilities.

I am greatly interested in mitigating and potentially reversing global warming caused by increased atmospheric carbon levels, having witnessed first-hand the impacts of atypical droughts, storms, and floods – now recognised as effects of climate change

Research

Integration of Direct Air Capture with Renewable Energy (INTERFACING)

My research focuses on extracting carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere using Direct Air Capture (DAC). DAC is a highly efficient yet energy-intensive technology. Its operational efficiency depends on the ambient conditions at capture locations modified by the emissions generated during the manufacture, operation, and decommissioning processes for carbon capture, transport, and storage. The provision of renewable or low-carbon energy sources, along with the optimal placement of DAC plants and carbon dioxide transport networks relative to storage locations, further impacts the efficiency and economic viability of this technology. My objective in the CDT is to leverage the knowledge and skills I have gained in data handling and geospatial analysis to identify optimal locations for DAC plants and carbon transport networks, incorporating associated financial and carbon cost models.
