To recognise the full economic benefits of this data revolution, we need a new generation of geospatial engineers, scientists and practitioners. They will have the knowledge, technical skills and innovation to transform our understanding of an increasingly complex world, and deliver well paid jobs and economic prosperity, coupled with benefits to society.
Our aim is to establish an internationally recognised centre of excellence of doctoral training in Geospatial Systems. Delivering future leaders and transformative research capability will enable the UK to maximise the economic benefits of the open geospatial data revolution.
We will develop a national cohort of internationally recognised research excellence in Geospatial Systems. This cohort will collectively form the highly skilled professionals required to realise the £11 billion annual economic benefit to the UK.
Working with the geospatial industry and the applied user base, we will develop a research training environment. Our PhDs will enter UK industry as geospatial scientists, engineers and practitioners. They will have the necessary computational and mathematical skills to maximise the Big Data, Cloud Computing, AI and IoT technologies driving global double digit annual growth.
We aim to provide bespoke industry-informed cohort-wide training. This training will include topics such as:
Our PhD candidates will develop the skills required to translate research into operational innovative business solutions, particularly within the SME and start-up sectors.
Our CDT will be a beacon of diversity and inclusion.
We recognise that experiences of people from different backgrounds, cultures and countries contribute to a wide range of relevant skills. Although these skills are beyond traditional academic qualifications, they are critical in a multidisciplinary cohort which spans the engineering-societal-environmental nexus.
